Shopify Meta Description: Character Limit, Examples and How to Change It
The meta description is the short paragraph under your page title in Google's results. It doesn't move your ranking much on its own, but it decides whether the person who sees your listing clicks it or the one below. On Shopify it is also one of the most often left empty fields in the whole admin.
Here is how long it should be, where to change it, and what a good one looks like.
What is the character limit?
Shopify's editor lets you type up to 320 characters. Google doesn't show that many. It cuts the snippet by width rather than an exact count, which in practice lands around 150–160 characters on desktop and less on mobile. Aim for about 150–155 so the sentence ends where you meant it to.
The SEO title has the same kind of limit: Shopify allows 70 characters, Google shows roughly 60 before cutting.
How to change the meta description in Shopify
- Product: open the product in the admin, scroll to Search engine listing, click Edit, and fill in Meta description. - Collection, page or blog post: same section at the bottom of each one. - Homepage: Online Store → Preferences → Title and meta description.
Save, and Google picks it up the next time it crawls the page. Requesting indexing for that URL in Google Search Console can speed that up.
Why your meta description is "not updating"
This is one of the most searched Shopify SEO questions, and there are usually three reasons:
1. Google hasn't recrawled the page yet. Changes can take days to a few weeks to appear. 2. Google chose different text. Google sometimes replaces your description with a sentence from the page when it thinks that better matches the search. A description that clearly describes the page makes this less likely. 3. Your theme or an app overrides it. Some themes or SEO apps output their own meta tag. View the page source and search for `name="description"` to see what is actually published.
Meta description examples
A good product meta description says what it is, who it's for, and one reason to choose it. No keyword lists.
- Weak: "Best shirt. Cheap shirts. Linen shirt men. Free shipping." - Better: "White linen shirt for men, relaxed fit and breathable for hot days. Pre-washed so it won't shrink. Free shipping over $50."
For a collection:
- Better: "Linen shirts for men in 8 colors, from slim to relaxed fit. Breathable for summer, easy to care for, with free returns."
For a blog post, promise the answer:
- Better: "How to choose a linen shirt that fits: the three measurements that matter, how linen shrinks, and which weave stays cool."
Only claim what is true for your store — free shipping, returns, materials. A description that promises something the page doesn't deliver gets the click and loses the sale.
Writing them for a whole catalog
Writing one is easy. Writing 300 that are all different, accurate and the right length is where stores give up and leave them empty. That's the job a meta description generator should do: read each product and write the title and description from what the product actually is.
EcomBoost AI writes SEO titles and meta descriptions for every product from your own catalog data, keeps them within Google's limits, and lets you save them to Shopify. Its SEO Traffic Engine also drafts blog articles for the searches around your products, with the meta description already written.
Frequently asked questions
### Does the meta description affect SEO ranking?
Google has said the meta description is not a direct ranking factor. It affects how many people click your result, and more clicks from the same position means more traffic from rankings you already have.
### What happens if I leave the meta description empty in Shopify?
Google writes its own snippet from text on the page. Sometimes that works; often it is a fragment of the description, a shipping banner or a navigation label, which gives searchers little reason to click.
### Should every product have a unique meta description?
Yes. Duplicated descriptions across products make listings look the same in results and waste the chance to describe what makes each product different.
