Shopify Duplicate Content: What Causes It and How to Fix It
Duplicate content on Shopify comes from three places: the same product listed twice, the same product reachable at more than one URL, and descriptions copied from the manufacturer. Google doesn't penalize a store for it, but it has to pick one version to show, and it may not pick yours.
Here is where each kind comes from, how to find it, and what to do about it.
Duplicate products
This is the most common kind and the easiest to fix. It usually happens after a CSV import that ran twice, a supplier app that synced the same item again, or a product duplicated to make a new color instead of adding a variant.
Two listings for one item split everything that should add up: reviews, links, sales history and search traffic. Google sees two near-identical pages and shows one, often the weaker one.
To fix it:
1. Decide which product to keep (usually the one with more sales or reviews). 2. If the duplicates are really colors or sizes, add them as variants on the kept product. 3. Delete or archive the extra listing. 4. Add a redirect from the old URL to the kept one under URL redirects (in Online Store → Navigation, or Content → Menus in newer admins). Shopify does not do this for you when you delete a product.
The /collections/x/products/y URLs
Every Shopify product lives at `/products/linen-shirt`. It can also open at `/collections/shirts/products/linen-shirt`, and at one more URL for every collection it belongs to.
Shopify handles most of this with a canonical tag: a line in the page code that tells Google which URL is the main one. On standard themes, the collection version points its canonical to `/products/linen-shirt`. You can check by opening the collection URL, viewing the page source and searching for `rel="canonical"`.
The remaining issue is internal links. Some older themes link from collection pages to the long collection URL, so Google keeps finding and crawling the duplicate versions. Newer themes usually link straight to `/products/`. If yours doesn't, the fix is in the theme code: in the product card snippet, links built with `| within: collection` produce the long URL. Removing that filter makes them link to the main product URL. Duplicate your theme first in Online Store → Themes and test on the copy, or ask your theme developer.
- Before: `/collections/shirts/products/linen-shirt` - After: `/products/linen-shirt`
Copied manufacturer descriptions
If you sell products other stores also sell, the supplier's description is probably on dozens of sites. Google won't punish you for it, but when the same text appears everywhere, it tends to show the manufacturer or the biggest retailer and filter the rest out.
The fix is to write your own:
- Copied: "High-quality material. Durable design. Perfect for everyday use." - Rewritten: "Waxed canvas tote that holds a 15-inch laptop and a change of clothes. The leather handles soften with use, and the inside pocket zips shut."
Start with your best sellers and the products you most want to rank. You don't need to rewrite a whole catalog in a weekend.
How to find duplicate content on your store
- Google Search Console → Pages. Look for "Duplicate without user-selected canonical", "Duplicate, Google chose different canonical than user" and "Alternate page with proper canonical tag". The last one is normal on Shopify; the first two deserve a look. - Exact-phrase search. Copy a sentence from a product description and search it in quotes on Google. If other sites show up, it's a shared supplier text. - Product export. Export from Products → Export and sort the CSV by title and by description. Repeated titles and identical descriptions stand out quickly. - Your own SEO fields. The same meta description on many products is duplicate content too, just in the search results instead of on the page.
EcomBoost AI finds duplicate products and products with missing or thin descriptions across your catalog, and fixes many of them in one click. It also rewrites product descriptions, SEO titles and meta descriptions from your own catalog data so each product reads differently, and saves them to Shopify. Frequently asked questions
### Does Google penalize duplicate content on Shopify?
Not in the sense of a penalty. Google has said duplicate content alone isn't grounds for action unless it's meant to manipulate results. What happens instead is that Google picks one version to show, which may not be the page you want ranking.
### Are the /collections/ product URLs bad for SEO?
Not on their own, since standard Shopify themes point their canonical tag to the main `/products/` URL. They become a problem mainly when your theme links to them everywhere, which spreads crawling across many copies of the same page.
### Should I rewrite every manufacturer description?
Ideally, yes, but prioritize. Start with best sellers, products with the most search potential, and anything you sell that many other stores also carry. A short, accurate description in your own words is better than a long copied one.
