Shopify Collection Page SEO: Descriptions, Titles, URLs and Internal Links

Shopify collection pages often rank better than product pages because they match broader searches like "linen shirts for men." To get there, give each collection a real description, a clear SEO title, a short URL handle and links from the rest of your store.

Why collections often rank better than products

A product page answers one narrow search: a specific shirt in a specific color. A collection answers the search a shopper types before they know which product they want, and those searches are usually broader and more common.

Collections also tend to have more going for them:

- More internal links. They sit in your main menu, so almost every page on the store links to them. - Longer life. Products sell out and get removed; a collection URL can stay the same for years and keep what it has earned. - A better match for shopping searches. Someone searching a category wants to compare options, which is exactly what a collection shows.

Write a collection description that says something

Go to Products → Collections, open the collection and fill in Description. Most themes show it at the top of the collection page.

Two or three short paragraphs are usually enough. Say what is in the collection, who it is for and how to choose between the options. Use the words a shopper would type, naturally, once or twice.

- Weak: "Shop our amazing collection of the best linen shirts. Linen shirts men. Buy linen shirts." - Better: "Linen shirts for men in slim and relaxed fits, pre-washed so they keep their size. Lighter weaves for hot days, heavier ones that hold a crease for the office. Not sure about fit? Each product lists chest and length measurements."

Set the SEO title and meta description

At the bottom of the same collection page, find Search engine listing and click Edit.

- Page title: Shopify allows 70 characters; Google shows roughly 60. Lead with the category, then what sets it apart: "Men's Linen Shirts: Slim and Relaxed Fit". - Meta description: about 150–155 characters that describe the range and one true reason to shop it, such as free returns or a size guide.

If you leave these empty, Shopify fills them from the collection title and description, which is often too short or cut off mid-sentence.

Keep the URL handle short and stable

The handle is the last part of the address: `/collections/mens-linen-shirts`. Shopify generates it from the collection title, so a collection named "SUMMER SALE 2024 – NEW!!" gets a messy handle that no longer makes sense next year.

- Use a few plain words that describe the category: `mens-linen-shirts`, not `collection-3` or `new-arrivals-june`. - Avoid dates and seasons in handles for collections you plan to keep. - If you change a handle on an established collection, keep the Create a URL redirect box checked when you save. You can review redirects under Online Store → Navigation → URL Redirects.

Link to your collections from the rest of the store

Internal links tell Google which pages matter most and help shoppers find them.

1. Main menu. Online Store → Navigation. Put your most important collections in the main menu, not buried three levels deep. 2. Product descriptions. Link to the parent collection where it helps: "See all our linen shirts." 3. Blog posts. A guide on choosing a linen shirt should link to the collection, with the category name as the link text instead of "click here."

Also clean up collections that compete with each other. Three near-identical collections ("Linen shirts," "Linen shirts men," "Men's linen") split your links and confuse Google about which one to show. Merge them, keep one and redirect the others.

EcomBoost AI rewrites SEO titles and meta descriptions from your own catalog and saves them to Shopify in one click, and it flags products with missing descriptions or images and duplicate products that weaken your collection pages. Its SEO Traffic Engine drafts blog articles for the searches around your products, which gives your collections more places to be linked from. Frequently asked questions

### Do Shopify collection descriptions help SEO?

Yes, when they are written for shoppers. A short description tells Google what the page is about and gives it words to match against searches, which an empty collection with only product thumbnails does not.

### Should I use automated or manual collections for SEO?

Google sees both the same way; what matters is the content and links on the page. Automated collections are easier to keep full as products change, while manual collections give you control over which products appear first.

### Why do my products have two URLs in Shopify?

When a shopper opens a product from a collection, many themes link to an address like `/collections/shirts/products/linen-shirt`. Shopify points the canonical tag of those pages to the main `/products/` address, so Google normally treats them as one page.
