Product Description Examples: 6 Before-and-After Rewrites for Shopify
Most product descriptions fail the same way: they describe the product the way the supplier sees it, not the way a buyer decides. The fastest way to see the difference is side by side. Below are six common types of weak descriptions, each with a rewrite and why it works.
The products are generic examples; the patterns apply to any catalog.
1. The spec list
Before: "Stainless steel. 500 ml. Double wall. BPA free. Lid included."
After: "Keeps coffee hot through a long commute and water cold all day at the gym. The double-wall steel body doesn't sweat in your bag, the 500 ml size fits most car cup holders, and the lid screws shut so it won't leak. BPA-free."
Why it works: the same facts, each turned into a moment the buyer recognizes. Specs stay, but they answer "what does that mean for me?"
2. The copied manufacturer text
Before: "Our premium quality product is designed with the highest standards to provide you with the best experience."
After: "A 100% linen shirt cut a little loose, so it stays cool on hot days. Pre-washed, so it won't shrink after the first wash. Sizes S–XXL; if you're between sizes, take the smaller one."
Why it works: it replaces adjectives anyone could claim with details only this product has. It also answers the sizing question that stops people from buying clothes online.
3. The one-liner
Before: "Beautiful ceramic vase."
After: "A hand-glazed ceramic vase, 25 cm tall, with a narrow neck that holds a few stems upright without a frog. The glaze varies slightly from piece to piece, so yours will be one of a kind. Watertight; wipe clean."
Why it works: size, use and care are what people need to picture it in their home. "Beautiful" is for the photos to prove.
4. The keyword stuffing
Before: "Dog bed large dog bed washable dog bed for large dogs best dog bed orthopedic dog bed."
After: "An orthopedic dog bed for large breeds up to 40 kg. The memory-foam base supports older joints, and the cover zips off and goes in the washing machine."
Why it works: the search terms are still there ("orthopedic dog bed", "large dogs", "washable"), but in sentences. Google reads for meaning; repeating a phrase doesn't help and buyers notice.
5. The wall of text
Before: one long paragraph mixing materials, delivery, care, and returns.
After: a two-sentence opening on who it's for and the main benefit, then a short list:
- Material: organic cotton - Fit: true to size - Care: machine wash cold - Delivery: ships in 1–2 business days
Why it works: most people scan. Lead with the reason to buy, then let them find the detail they're checking.
6. The missing objection
Before: "Wireless earbuds with great sound."
After: "Wireless earbuds with up to 6 hours of playback and another 18 from the case. The silicone tips come in three sizes so they stay in on a run. Works with iPhone and Android."
Why it works: it answers the questions that cause returns — battery life, fit, compatibility — before they're asked. Only state numbers your supplier actually guarantees.
The pattern: start with who it's for and why it matters, keep the facts but explain them, answer the question that stops the purchase, and use the words people search in normal sentences.
EcomBoost AI rewrites product descriptions this way across your whole catalog, from your own product data, and saves them to Shopify when you approve. It never adds specs or claims your products don't have.
Frequently asked questions
### How long should a product description be?
Long enough to answer what a buyer needs to decide, and no longer. For simple products that can be two or three sentences plus a short list; for higher-priced or technical products, more detail helps. Lead with the most important information either way.
### Should product descriptions include keywords for SEO?
Yes, naturally: the words people use to search for the product should appear in the title and description, in normal sentences. Repeating keywords doesn't help rankings and makes the page read worse.
### Can I use the manufacturer's description?
You can, but many other stores will have the exact same text, which gives Google no reason to rank your page and gives buyers no reason to choose you. Rewriting it in your own words, with the details your buyers care about, is better on both counts.
